1. another可視為由“an+other”構成，但總是寫成一個詞，不能寫成an other;其后一般只接單數可數名詞，不接復數名詞或不可數名詞。another有兩個基本意義：
(1) 外加的，同樣的。如：
Don’t say another word. 不要再說了。
Let me have another cup of tea. 給我再來一杯茶。
(2) 不同的，另外的。如：
That’s another Story. 那是另一碼事。
Give me another cup. This one’s cracked. 請給我換個杯子，這個裂了。
If I were you, I should get another lawyer. 如果我是你，我就請別的律師。
這樣用的another表泛指。比較：
Give me another (one). 另外給我一個。(表泛指)
Give me the other (one). 給我另外那個。(表特指)
2. 在通常情況下，another 后不能接復數名詞或不可數名詞，但是若復數名詞之前有 few 或數詞修飾，或不可數名詞之前有 piece of 之類的單位詞時等，則可以與 another 連用。如：
I could go on for another two hours. 我再講兩個小時都講不完。
I need another few days before l can make up my mind. 我還需幾天才能決定。
3. one 有時可與 another 對照使用。如：
One (boy) wanted to read, and another wanted to watch TV. 一個(男孩)想看書，另一個則想看電視。
One day he wanted his lunch early, another day he wanted it late. 他一天要早點吃午飯，另一天又要晚點吃午飯。
4. 習語one after another意為“一個接一個地”“相繼地”“依次地”，在句中主要用作狀語。如：
Planes took off one after another. 飛機陸續起飛。
One after another all his plans have failed. 他的計劃都一一失敗了。
有時也可用作主語或賓語。如：
One after another began to choke, and at the end all the women were weeping. 人們一個接一個哽咽起來，到結束的時候婦女們全都哭了。
注意，該結構多用于三者或三者以上的“依次”，如指兩者“依次”，則通常用one after the other。如：
The boy showed me his dirty hands one after the other. 那男孩把他臟兮兮的手依序伸給我看。
5. one another 與 each other：兩者均表示“彼此”“互相”，原認為 one another 用于三者或三者以上，each other 用于兩者，但在現代英語中，兩者常可換用。值得注意的是，“互相”一詞，在中文里給人的感覺好像是副詞，但其實它們是代詞，因此它們在句不用作狀語，若用于不及物動詞之后時，要考慮添加適合的介詞。如：
We don’t always agree with one another [each other]. 我們的意見并不總是一致的。
They spoke to one another [each other] in a very friendly manner. 他們態度十分和善地彼此交談。
注意，它們雖為代詞，但在句中主要用作賓語，習慣上不用作主語，若語義上有類似需要，可考慮使用類似以下這樣的表達：
Each of them knew the other’s weak point. 他們每個人都知道其他人的弱點。
One man shouted to another in his own language. 他們用自己的語言互相吼叫著。
另外，若語義需要，它們還可用于所有格。如：
They often stay in one another’s [each other’s] house. 他們常常在彼此的家里住。
Those two are always copying each other’s [one another’s] homework. 那兩個人總是互相抄襲作業。
